Dokhra design
Dhokra is an ancient technique of metal casting practiced in India. Using an alloy of brass, nickel and zinc, the metal is casted using clay and wax moulding. This casting technique dates back to pre-historic India and artisans have helped keep the craft alive. The creation process is slow and complex with many steps involved in the process which make it an intricate form of metal casting. However, the materials and tools needed for this type of art are relatively inexpensive which makes it accessible to a wide variety of people in India.
To make a dhokra piece, an artisan would create a wax or clay mold of the object they wish to cast in metal and then fill it with a mixture of the alloys mentioned above. After this, the artisan would pour molten metal into the mold to create the finished piece.
